Nutrition and Diet

Most regular veterinarians do not recommend homemade food for pets, and many actively discourage it.
Most however, do recommend cooked hamburger and rice when the pet is sick or has diarrhea.
Why is it healthy for them when they are sick but not when they are healthy?

Carbohydrates refers to any starch: grains including rice, wheat, oats, barley, bread, cereal etc.

How Does Diet affect Health?

NOTHING is more important in life than food!

It IS true that “you are what you eat”- Each of the cells in our bodies and our pets’ bodies are replaced on a regular basis, made up of whatever we eat.

Good nutrition is the most important factor in forming a healthy immune system, liver, kidneys and other organs, blood cells, brains, and all the others tissues of our bodies.
If a pretzel nugget was to be the only food you would eat for the rest of your life, would you happy? Would you expect to be healthy and satisfied with your life? I absolutely would not!
Dogs and cats have a much better sense of smell than we do, so they also surely have a keener sense of taste.
When you cook great smelling human food which they smell but then are not allowed to eat, it has to be torture for them. It would be for me for sure!
Great health depends on eating fresh foods such as meat and vegetables
rather than processed food that is made with chemicals

Our pets should eat a good variety of homemade meat, vegetables and even fruits (except for grapes nor raisins which have caused problems in a small number of dogs).

This food can be added to a good commercial diet or fed as the only food.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE SUPPLEMENT VITAMINS AND MINERALS and my practice is dedicated to helping you figure out how to safely add human foods to your pet’s diet.

The old saying “you are what you eat” is very true. Your pet’s body continuously rebuilds all the cells of the immune system, the liver, kidneys, and heart and other tissues like muscles, tendons and bone. All the rebuilt cells are made from nutrients in the food. High quality food is essential!
“…..dogs and cats have no established dietary requirement for carbohydrates. After weaning, neither pups nor adult dogs- not even those subjected to hard work- require carbohydrate in the diet….. Feeding high-carbohydrate diets can cause physiologic abnormalities and signs of disease.”
Donald Strombeck, DVM, PhD, Professor Emeritus at UC Davis School of Vet Medicine in his book: Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets.
Our pets don’t get to go to the movies or to parties. Food is one of the highlights of their day. Fresh, nutritious REAL FOOD will make your critters HAPPY and HEALTHY!
